Overcoming the Challenges of Green Hydrogen: Optimising Efficiency & Cost

Replacing traditional hydrogen production with #greenhydrogen faces several challenges, including cost, #efficiency, renewable electricity availability at low-cost plus demand for new systems, coupled with the need to develop a reliable supply chain.

Patenting trends focus on optimising operating conditions and electrolyser structures to boost efficiency. Where higher temperatures and pressures are desirable due to increased reaction rates, reduced overvoltage and enhanced gas solubility - hence why #SolidOxideElectrolysis (SOE) setups are leveraging their ability to utilise waste heat to boost stack level efficiencies.

Disparities between the high energy needed for hydrogen generation versus the energy content of the end product, further emphasises the need to reduce energy consumption and increase efficiency as means of boosting hydrogen's #decarbonisation potential.

Achieving competitive costs requires a deep understanding of overpotentials, heat losses, cell design, transport losses and electrolyser sub-system efficiencies, including stack, operational profile and Balance of Plant (BoP). In addition to advanced materials and technologies, plus the need to reduce standby events which consume energy during idle mode and restarts.

Biyat Energy & Environment Ltd leads the way in green hydrogen production by collaborating with developers to tackle cost, efficiency, and renewable energy challenges. Leveraging advanced electrolyser technologies and innovative strategies, we enhance system efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and ensure the integration of reliable supply chains for a sustainable energy transition.
