Environmental Challenges Facing Industrial Facilities

Biyat Energy & Environment Ltd's Luay Zayed shares his thoughts on the key challenges facing advanced industrial facility developers over the next decade.

"Whatever industry you look at, whether it be #datacentres, #electrification, #advancedmanufacturing etc. - the challenges are the same. There is an unrelentless drive towards decarbonisation and 'greener' ways of doing things. The price and availability of sustainable fuels and energy such as #greenhydrogen, #nuclear or #CCU-based fuels will have a huge impact on CapEx, OpEx & profitability for many organisations and their respective facility project aspirations - which is why the race is on to reduce their associated costs.

Increasingly stricter environmental laws and policies are constantly evolving and creating a minefield of things to consider when conceptualising a new facility and long-term industrial activity, leading developers to establish in emerging markets with favourable regulations, permitting timelines, labour and utility costs.

Critical mineral availability and the environmental impacts associated with sourcing them is also a major hurdle affecting most technology roadmaps, with many countries developing policies to keep resources 'in-house' in a highly competitive environment. Synthetic alternative producers are also under immense pressure to decarbonise their manufacturing processes, with even greater pressure on #recycling efficiency improvements.

Due to unpredictable future market conditions, many organisations are having to deeply reconsider their forward planning strategies with a focus on smaller, diversified facility investments that are short- to medium-term in nature, combining proven sustainable technologies with pilot projects to validate the use of newer techs prior to full-scale implementation.

This is precisely why Biyat was formed - to inform 'green' decision-making and seamlessly integrate with project delivery teams globally.
Our #facilityengineering and mega-project delivery expertise combined with our focus on environmental and energy management put us in good stead to lead organisations into a greener future, together, on an international level."
