The Role of Fluoropolymers in Green Hydrogen

PFAS, known as "forever chemicals," are synthetic substances used for their resistance to heat, water, and oil. However, their environmental persistence and health risks have led to increased regulation.

Green hydrogen production often involves fluoropolymers, a subclass of PFAS, which are crucial in electrolysers and fuel cells. These materials are essential but raise environmental concerns from production to disposal.

A 2023 Hydrogen Council report emphasised that broad PFAS bans could hinder climate change goals by affecting investments in hydrogen technologies. It argued for targeted regulations, distinguishing fluoropolymers from other PFAS due to their unique properties and lower environmental impact.
However, there is opposition to the notion that fluoropolymers should be exempt from such grouping. Critics argue that restricting PFAS will speed up innovation as it encourages the development of safer, PFAS-free alternatives in various sectors. In fact, strides in PFAS-free innovation are already being made, with research and development focussing on alternative materials and technologies for green hydrogen production and other applications.
